Sure is lonely out there!

Wednesday was the first day that I have ridden both to and from work without seeing another cyclist anywhere. Thursday I saw only one other person, and this morning I saw only one other. Granted, I have seen some tracks in the snow here and there, so I know other people were out, but other than seeing the evidence, it has felt lonely. For me, I take comfort in the idea that I am not the only one out there.

I wondered to myself yesterday what the hell I was doing out there on the road on a bike in the snow during the winter. Wondering to myself if I am “ahead of the curve” and if I should be commended for my efforts, or if I truly am as nuts as what people seem to look at me.

I am feeling a bit confused lately… motivated and excited to take on the day, discouraged by riding in near constant darkness, tired of winter already, looking forward to spring, inspired by other people’s accomplishments, worn down.

Today marks 110 consecutive days.

you are not alone for sure! I also have these feelings, as I see fewer and fewer people.

I started winter commuting during the 2004/05 winter season, and I seldom saw anybody out there. There were a handful of occasions I saw this one guy, but that was it. I get the impression that more people are riding now, though my own bike commuting miles are way, way down.
